Watch a Subaru set a sub-7-minute Nurburgring lap recordby Ben Hsu
The WRX STI Type RA NBR nabs the fastest lap for a sedan.
The Subaru WRX STI Type RA NBR broke the sedan record around the Nurburgring back in July. Now the Japanese carmaker has released in-car footage of the feat.
Those familiar with the course from motorsports coverage and video game simulations know that the Nurburgring Nordschleife is a challenging 13-mile course of rolling German countryside. Subaru's time of 6:57.578 is nothing short of amazing, faster than a Dodge Viper ACR and merely half a second behind the the $847,000 Porsche 918 Spyder.
The Subaru isn't a production car like the 918 and Viper are categorized as — you can't simply walk into a Subaru dealer and buy one — but the record car did begin life as a stock WRX STI. It was then modified by Prodrive, who outfitted it with a "rally spec" 2.0-liter boxer motor that cranked up turbo boost to 25 psi. The result was 600 horsepower at 8,500 rpm. Body-wise, an aero package good for 650 pounds of downforce and a race cage helped manage a top speed of 179 mph on the back stretch.
Previous sedan records at the Green Hell were held by the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio and Porsche Panamera Turbo. Watch the record run below, along with a behind-the-scenes video.
