VW Tiguan aces crash tests; LED headlights deemed 'poor'

by Justin King

The redesigned crossover has earned a Top Safety Pick award but does not qualify for the \'Plus\' club.

Volkswagen's 2018 Tiguan has earned a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The redesigned crossover aced all IIHS crash tests and received a 'superior' rating for its optional automatic emergency braking system, apparently barely bumping an obstacle when approaching from 25 mph.

The previous-generation Tiguan -- smaller than the new model -- earned a marginal rating in the small overlap test. The larger 2018 edition held up well with maximum intrusion of just two inches at the lower door-hinge pillar.

The Tiguan's two headlight configurations fell short of the 'acceptable' or 'good' rating necessary to join the Top Safety Pick Plus ranks. Interestingly, the base halogen headlights earned a 'marginal' rating while the SEL Premium trim's LED headlights step down to a 'poor' mark.

The Hyundai Santa Fe is currently the only midsize SUV to pass the IIHS headlight tests with a 'good' rating. Other TSP+ winners in the segment include the Toyota Highlander, Kia Sorento, Mazda CX-9 and Honda Pilot.
