Tesla developing more powerful 'plaid' powertrain for Model S, X, Roadster
"The only thing beyond Ludicrous is Plaid," says Elon Musk.
Tesla is developing an even faster powertrain that will be used in the Model S, Model X and Roadster.
Taking inspiration from the movie Spaceballs, the new powertrain is referred to as 'Plaid.'
"To be clear, Plaid powertrain is about a year away from production & applies to S,X & Roadster, but not 3 or Y," CEO Elon Musk said on Twitter. "Will cost more than our current offerings, but less than competitors."
On paper, the Model S Performance with 'Ludicrous' acceleration is marginally quicker to 60 mph than the new Porsche Taycan. The new powertrain will presumably help Tesla's flagship sedan widen the gap and have a better chance at beating the German newcomer's Nurburgring record.
"The only thing beyond Ludicrous is Plaid," Musk added.
The company is also apparently bringing back the seven-seat Model S configuration, which is currently testing at the Nurburgring.
