Tesla launches Supercharger V3 with '1000mi/hr' charge rate

by Justin King

Up to 75 miles of range can be added in just five minutes.

Tesla has launched its third-generation charging technology, known as Supercharger V3.

Employing a completely new architecture, the V3 system centers around a 1MW power cabinet that can support peak charge rates of up to 250kW per car.

The company advertises the rate as "1,000 miles per hour," meaning it is capable of adding 1,000 miles of range in just one hour. The metric is a bit misleading, however, as the peak charge rate of 75 miles in 5 minutes presumably decreases to a slower pace as the battery gets closer to full capacity.

"Supercharger stations with V3's new power electronics are designed to enable any owner to charge at the full power their battery can take - no more splitting power with a vehicle in the stall next to you," the company says. "With these significant technical improvements, we anticipate the typical charging time at a V3 Supercharger will drop to around 15 minutes."

The technology is initially rolling out to the Model 3 as a public beta in the Bay Area. Tesla says the Model S and X charging speeds will be 'increased' via software updates in the coming months, though it is unclear if the S and X will support the full 250kW charge rate.
