Suzuki Swift to return to U.S.

by Nick Aziz

The next-generation Suzuki Swift hatchback will come to the United States around 2010, a company official has told Automotive News. "The Swift is known as a pocket rocket internationally, and that is the type of product we want here," said Gene Brown, marketing director of American Suzuki.

A Swift designed for and built in North America was sold between 1995 and 2003 in the United States and Canada. A much sportier Swift was introduced in Europe in 2004, but it was never brought to America.

The 2010 model is expected to continue in this sporty direction, this time with U.S. consumers specifically in mind. It's not known if the new Swift will be built in North America or imported from Japan or elsewhere.
