Paris LIVE: smart forstars conceptby Ronan Glon
Thanks to a Bluetooth connection, the forstars can turn into a mobile movie theater.
Daimler-owned smart has lifted the veil off of its new forstars concept, an electric two-seater coupe that could preview a successor to the long-defunct Roadster model.
Measuring 139 inches long, 67 inches wide and 59 inches tall, the forstars is billed as the world's first SUC, an acronym which stands for Sports Utility Coupé. Like the diminutive fortwo, it is built around a Tridion safety cell which aims to keep the occupants safe in the event of a crash.
Aesthetically, the forstars wears a more aggressive styling than any previous smart model, a look which is emphasized by its oversized three-spoke wheels.
The forstars is powered by a rear-mounted Brabus-developed electric motor which is derived from the one found in the smart fortwo electric drive. It has been tweaked to put out 99 lb-ft. of torque, slightly more than the electric fortwo, and propels the car to a top speed of over 80 mph. The 60-kilowatt motor draws electricity from a lithium-ion battery pack.
Perhaps the most original aspect of the forstars is found by looking under the hood. Instead of an engine, smart has fitted a projector which turns the car into a mobile movie theater. The occupants can send a flick from their smartphone to the projector via a Bluetooth connection and watch it on any flat and light-colored surface.
The smartphone also acts as the car's rear-view mirror. When mounted on the dashboard, it streams live images from a bumper-mounted camera and shows the driver what is behind the car.
Futuristic to say the least, the forstars' interior features digital gauges and an open top steering wheel which incorporates buttons that replace the turn signal stalk. The vast amount of trunk space made possible by the two-seater layout is accessible by lifting a large glass hatch and lowering the tailgate.
While a production version of the forstars will likely never make the transition to production, the concept is likely and early preview for a new coupe model.
