Range Rover SVR beats Ferrari 458's Tianmen record [Video]by Justin King
In standard production form, the SUV shaved 40 seconds off the Ferrari 458's benchmark through the 99 turns of Tianmen Road.
Land Rover is celebrating a unique time trial victory after setting a record on Tianmen Road in China.
The Range Rover Sport SVR launched through all 99 turns in just 9 minutes 51 seconds, beating the previous benchmark time of 10 minutes 31 seconds set in a Ferrari 458 Italia.
The record-beating SVR was in standard production form and piloted by test driver Ho-Pin Tung.
"Maintaining concentration was the biggest challenge as the road twists and turns constantly, with huge drop-offs to the side," he said. "The consequences of getting it wrong would have been really serious so I focused on establishing a rhythm and the Range Rover Sport SVR made this easy - it may be an SUV but it has the performance and agility of a supercar and can take you to places a supercar can only dream of."
The SVR was made more powerful for the 2019 model year, with 575 horsepower and a zero-to-60 mph time of just 4.3 seconds. The refresh also introduced more carbon fiber and a few other design adjustments.
