CES LIVE: Nissan Leaf Nismo RC racer gets double power, AWD
The electric race car can now hit 62 mph in just 3.4 seconds.
Nissan has revealed an updated Leaf Nismo RC all-electric race car, adding a second motor for more power. The concept made its debut in Japan in November 2018, and we caught up with it during CES 2019.
The purpose-built racer was originally launched with rear-wheel drive. The extra motor enables all-wheel drive, with a combined 322 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque sent to all four wheels -- more than double the maximum power and torque of the RWD model.
The Leaf Nismo RC is a far cry from the production EV, built upon a carbon composite monocoque structure with a weight of just 2,690 pounds, though it does source its lithium-ion battery and inverters from the street car.
Nissan says the more powerful racer can launch from zero to 62 mph in 3.4 seconds, a 50-percent improvement over the previous model.
The Leaf Nismo RC will be limited to just six units that will be deployed across the globe to highlight Nissan's electric vehicle endeavors.
