The NV200 is Nissan's offering in the growing compact van segment. Aimed at commercial buyers who want something smaller, wieldier and more efficient than a traditional full-size van, it offers a good combination of space, available technology features and value.
With compact dimensions and a car-like unibody platform, the NV200 is highly maneuverable for a van and boasts a tight 36.7-foot turning circle. Despite its size, the NV200 features a useful 122.7 cubic feet of cargo space and a 1,500-pound payload capacity. The cargo area is fitted with integrated mounting points for installing racks and shelves, while six floor mounted cargo hooks can be spec'd to help secure bulky items.
Dual sliding side doors and a low 19.5-inch load floor make the most of the available interior real estate, as do 60/40-split rear doors. Nissan designed the 40-percent rear door for reduced intrusion into traffic when parked at the side of a street, and both rear doors feature dual 90-degree and 180-degree opening positions. All of the doors feature fixed panels as standard, although glass windows can be specified as an option.
Befitting its work-van status, the cabin is a simple but ergonomically-friendly space. Small-item storage is plentiful thanks to a center console featuring laptop/hanging file folder storage, a pen and pencil tray, a CD holder, and dual cupholders. Recessed storage cubbies are also located on the upper instrument panel for folders and documents, and the passenger seat even folds down to serve as a worktop or extends the cargo space for hauling longer items.
A full array of modern convenience options is available, (full details below), with highlights including Bluetooth with audio streaming, a navigation system with real-time traffic updates, a hands-free text-messaging assist, Nissan Mobile Apps including Facebook and Pandora, and a backup camera.
The NV200 is powered by an efficiency-minded 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 131 horsepower and 139 lb-ft of torque. With the help of a new CVT, the mill returns an economical 24 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.
Standard and optional features
The NV200 is available in S and SV trims.
The S comes standard with an AM/FM/CD stereo with auxiliary input and two front door mounted speakers, power windows, a 12-volt power outlet on the instrument panel and a passenger-side underseat storage tray.
The SV adds power heated outside mirrors, power door locks with auto-locking feature, remote keyless entry with two key fobs, cruise control with steering wheel-mounted controls, rear cargo floor mat, additional 12V power point in the rear of the center console, six floor-mounted cargo hooks in the cargo area, and full wheel covers.
Options include a Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System with audio streaming capability, a Rear Parking Sonar system, a RearView Monitor, XM Satellite Radio and Nissan's Fleet Tracker system, which helps with business logistics. The technology package boasts a new navigation system with a 5.8-inch touchscreen and voice recognition, Mobile Apps, Bluetooth integration, SirusXM satellite radio, SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link, hands-free text messaging assistant, a USB port for MP3 players and a RearView camera system.
Other available features include a Back Door Glass Package, a Sliding Door Glass Package and an Exterior Appearance Package with body-color bumpers, door handles and outside mirrors and chrome grille.
All NV200 models are fitted with dual front, front side and side-curtain airbags in addition to stability and traction control systems and a tire pressure monitoring system.
Buyers considering the NV200 should also research the similarly-sized Ford Transit as well as the more expensive but larger and more powerful Ram Cargo Van.
