The Elantra Coupe is the two-door version of Hyundai's strong-selling Elantra Sedan. It's designed to deliver the same safety and fuel economy found in the four-door, but in a sportier package aimed at youthful buyers seeking a more thrilling and stylish ride.
For the latest model year, the Elantra Coupe benefits from a new 173-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder, which replaces last year's 148-horsepower 1.8-liter. Other revisions include a firmer suspension, a more refined and technology-packed interior, and a Hyundai's Blue Link telamatics service.
Additionally, the previous two trim levels have been combined into a single model.
Stylistically, the Elantra Coupe shares much with its sedan sibling, with the most obvious differences including a gracefully sloping roofline, side windows that sit flat rather than sweeping up and a more distinct lower character line (part of the car's "fluidic sculpture” surface detailing) that flows into the rear fender flare.
For the latest model year, the coupe gains new wheel designs, a blacked-out grille and available LED headlights.
As it's nearly identical in length, width and height to the sedan, the coupe boasts a fairly spacious interior for its segment, complete with a larger trunk (14.8 cubic-feet) than any of its rivals.
The coupe's cabin has been upgraded as part of the recent update, with changes to the flowing, stylized dashboard including higher-mounted, more effective air vents along with more user-friendly stereo and HVAC controls. A 4.3-inch touchscreen audio system and a rearview camera have been added as standard equipment, while a new navigation system with a seven-inch touchscreen and Pandora radio integration is an optional extra.
Hyundai's useful Blue Link telematics service is another new addition to the Elantra Coupe, bringing with it a wide variety of function and services like voice text messaging, point-of-interest web search and download, automatic collision notification, and remote vehicle unlocking in addition to traffic, weather, restaurant and nearby gas station information.
Cabin noise levels are down for the latest model year due to a plethora of NVH-combating measures, including extra A-pillar foam, a full underbody cover and anti-vibration dash panel material.
The Elantra Coupe is motivated by a 2.0-liter inline-four that produces 173 horsepower and 154 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, with a six-speed automatic offered as an extra-cost option.
Fuel economy figures have not yet been released.
Standard and Optional Features
The Elantra Coupe is fitted as standard with include heated front seats, Bluetooth, cruise control, a 172-watt AM/FM/Satellite Radio/CD audio system with a 4.3-inch touchscreen display along with AUX and USB inputs, a rearview camera, Bluetooth connectivity, fog lights, power heated exterior mirrors and 16-inch alloy wheels in addition to expected (but not always included) features like A/C and power windows and locks.
The optional Technology Package includes a navigation system with a seven-inch display, leather upholstery, 360-watt premium audio system, dual-zone automatic temperature control, automatic headlights, Hyundai's Blue Link telematics system, auto on/off headlights and a proximity key with push-button start.
All Elantra Coupe models come standard with dual front, front side and side curtain airbags in addition to traction and stability control systems, electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist.
Compact two-door competitors to the Elantra Coupe include the conservative Honda Civic Coupe, the handsome and the reliable Scion tC. Those willing to settle for a hatchback can also consider Hyundai's own truly funky , the more expensive but fine-handling MINI Cooper or the hybrid Honda CR-Z.
