Mercedes: SLC's future "under discussion"

by Ronan Glon

The SL is safe, however.

The end could be near for the Mercedes-Benz SLC, the two-seater roadster formerly known as the SLK. One of the company's top officials cast serious doubts on the model's future.

"I don't know, it's under discussion. Under construction, so to speak," replied Mercedes-AMG boss Tobias Moers when asked by about the SLC's long-term prospects.

Though he stopped short of confirming the SLC's demise, his comments seemingly go hand-in-hand with claiming AMG's next standalone model will be a small two-door aimed right at the Porsche 718. We don't know if it will be coupe-only, convertible-only, or both.

The bigger SL is safe. Though it overlaps with the convertible variant of the GT, Moers remains confident the emblematic roadster faces a bright future as Mercedes moves to push the next-generation model closer to the original car's roots. That means it should be more of a carver and less of a cruiser. He flatly denied the rumors claiming AMG is in charge of developing the model, hower.

"I heard about that rumor. That rumor is wrong," he said.

We expect to see the next-generation Mercedes-Benz SL break cover before the end of the decade. As for the SLC, we'll learn more about its fate in the coming months.
