The BMW X6 has a legitimate rival in the Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S Coupe.
Not to be outdone by BMW and its X6 M, Mercedes-Benz is using the 2015 Detroit auto show to introduce the world to its take on the high-performance crossover. Called the Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S Coupe, the new model melds AMG performance with the slick styling of Mercedes' latest GLE Coupe crossover.
The heart of any AMG product is the engine, and that holds true for the GLE63 S Coupe. Powered by a 5.5L biturbo V8, the GLE63 S Coupe cranks out a massive 577 horsepower and 561 lb-ft of torque.
In order to handle that power efficiently, the GLE63 S Coupe employs a seven-speed automatic transmission and an AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive system with a 40/60 front/rear power split. Despite its sizable footprint, the GLE63 S Coupe can hustle from 0-62 in 4.2 seconds.
Cornering promises to be a GLE63 S Coupe strong suit thanks to active anti-roll bars and an air suspension that is design reduce body lean. A "Comfort” setting is also included with the air suspension, giving the GLE63 S Coupe somewhat of a split personality.
AMG brakes are fitted as standard, ensuring the GLE63 S Coupe can stop as well as it accelerates.
"We see great potential in this vehicle segment, which is new to Mercedes-AMG,” said Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. "The GLE63 Coupe is the logical progression of our ambitious growth strategy - after all, in 1999 with the first high-performance SUV ML55 AMG, we established a completely new segment.”
Stylistically, the GLE63 S Coupe stands out from the crowd with larger front air inlets, front splitter, LED headlights, flared wheel arches and 22-inch AMG wheels. Interior tweaks for the GLE63 S Coupe include 3-spoke performance steering wheel with paddle shifters, leather-covered instrument panel, AMG-specific gauge cluster and AMG badging.
Pricing for the 2016 Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S Coupe will be announced closer to its late-summer launch date.
