Spied: 2020 Mercedes CLA Shooting Brakeby Byron Hurd
The next-generation baby wagon is expected to hit the streets next fall.
Photographers in Germany captured the updated Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake testing Monday, giving us our first glance at the not-quite-hatchback, not-quite-wagon wearing its new sheet metal.
The prototype shown here is still wearing fairly heavy camo, so there's not a ton of detail to see quite yet. Exhaust is visible in one of the shots, so it's safe to assume this mule burns fossil fuel.
Speaking of powertrains, the new CLA is expected to get at least one additional AMG variant to slot below the current Mercedes-AMG CLA45. A new A-Class sporting the Mercedes-AMG A35 badge was shown in Paris, and we suspect that treatment will make its way to the CLA and GLA lineups in short order.
We're not certain yet how extensively Mercedes-AMG will explore mild hybrid systems on its smaller performance cars, but we wouldn't be surprised to see something like that materialize on some models before too long.
Mercedes-Benz introduced the current Shooting Brake after other variants of the CLA and that pattern will continue with the new model. We expect the base CLA to hit showrooms next year as a 2019 model, with the Shooting Brake getting a formal introduction for 2020 in the fall.
