Next Maserati GranTurismo to be more driver-focused, coupe-only

The next GranTurismo is tentatively scheduled to land in 2018.

Maserati has confirmed that the next generation of its flagship GranTurismo sports car will go coupe-only when it is introduced in 2018.

"The [GranCabrio] convertible will be discontinued. The Americans love it, but one major market alone simply does not generate enough volume," company CEO Harald Wester in an interview with British magazine CAR.

According to Wester, the GranTurismo will morph into a more hardcore, driver-focused coupe for its second generation. High-end models will continue to be offered with a potent V8 engine, but a more affordable entry-level coupe powered by a twin-turbocharged V6 mill will likely join the lineup in order to help boost Maserati sales.

The GranTurismo will ride on an heavily-modified evolution of the platform that currently underpins the and the . While the two sedans are offered with weather-beating all-wheel drive, the coupe will exclusively be available with rear-wheel drive when it goes on sale.

What's Next?Buyers looking for a topless Maserati won't be entirely out of luck. The long-awaited 911-fighting coupe is scheduled to land in showrooms next year, and Maserati has all but confirmed that it will introduce a convertible version of it in 2017.
