Detroit LIVE: 2020 Lexus RC F and RC F Track Edition

by Byron Hurd

The 2020 RC F gets more power and the Track Edition sheds nearly 200 pounds.

The Supra may be Toyota's big debut for this year's North American International Auto Show, but luxury subsidiary Lexus decided to tag along and remind everybody that it already has a performance coupe--and one with a V8.

And that V8 is getting more power.

It's a modest bump--just another horses--and it's only part of the story, but it's evidence of the fact that Lexus plans to see the RC F through the rest of its service life, and while it may be little more than an upmarket Japanese pony car, that's no bad thing.

To make the RC F more attractive to die-hard enthusiasts, Lexus is adding a new Track Edition to the lineup for 2020. Taking inspiration from the RC F GT car (), the Track Edition makes use of some lighter-weight components and offers aggressive fixed aerodynamic elements.

The obvious carbon fiber bits are just part of a much more comprehensive light-weighting regimen. The Track Edition also sports carbon ceramic brake rotors, lightweight calipers and forged BBS wheels.

The result is a car that is 176 pounds lighter than the car on which it is based and much slicker through the air. A new launch control system (standard on even the base RC F) propels this new package to 60 MPH in just under 4.0 seconds by Lexus' estimates.

The 2020 Lexus RC F will enter production in the second half of 2019. Pricing updates will come closer to its dealer introduction. Stay tuned.
