Land Rover's first-gen Range Rover Sport officially out of productionby Drew Johnson
Production has come to a close for Land Rover\'s first-generation Range Rover Sport
Production of the first-generation Land Rover Range Rover Sport officially came to a close on Thursday as the British automaker gears up for production of an all-new, second-generation Sport model.
Launched in 2005, the Range Rover Sport quickly became one of Land Rover's most popular models. Land Rover says it has sold more than 400,000 units of the Sport over the last eight years, including 11,000 in China in 2012 alone.
But, perhaps more importantly, the first-generation Range Rover Sport was a huge money maker for Land Rover. In fact, it's rumored that the Sport was once Ford's single most profitable product, generating even more money than the F-150 pickup truck.
However, a Land Rover source called that rumor "an urban myth,” telling that the Range Rover had bigger per-vehicle margins than the Sport.
Although a tough act to follow, the all-new promises to carry on the nameplate's winning ways, thanks in large to sleeker styling and an 800 pound weight reduction.
