Parents of "Star Trek" actor Anton Yelchin sue FCA for wrongful deathby Drew Johnson
FCA is facing a wrongful death lawsuit from the parents of Anton Yelchin.
The parents of "Star Trek” actor Anton Yelchin, when his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled backwards and pinned him against a brick pillar, are suing Fiat Chrysler Automobiles for negligence and product liability.
The wrongful death suit was filed Tuesday in Los Angeles County Superior Court. Yelchin's parents allege in the suit that FCA was aware of the Grand Cherokee's "defective” transmission design, but didn't do enough to protect the safety of owners. FCA has recalled more than 800,000 vehicle equipped with the so-called e-shifter in the United States because it's "not intuitive and provides poor tactile and visual feedback to the driver, increasing the potential for unintended gear selection.”
"In spite of our unbelievable grief, we decided to come here to prevent other families from the same tragedy,” Victor Yelchin, Anton's father, said, according to The Huffington Post.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there have been at least 266 crashes linked to the defective shift lever design, which returns to a central position regardless of the gear selected. Those accidents have caused 68 injuries, with Yelchin's death marking the only known fatality.
