Jeep developing Renegade plug-in hybridby Justin King
The electrified Renegade is expected to arrive on the market in 2020.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has confirmed plans to launch a Renegade plug-in hybrid.
The FCA Melfi Plant in Italy is already preparing to build the PHEV variant, targeting pre-production units next year and full series production by early 2020.
Like most mainstream automakers, FCA is ramping up development of electrified vehicles to comply with tightening emissions regulations and help transition away from diesel.
By 2022, FCA will offer a total of 12 electric propulsion systems including pure battery-powered, plug-in hybrid, full hybrid and mild hybrid. No less than 30 models will be equipped with one or more of the systems.
The Renegade PHEV announcement was referenced in a press release for Europe. The company has not explicitly confirmed plans for a US launch, though such an offering is highly likely.
