Detroit LIVE: Hyundai Santa Cruz Crossover Truck Concept [Video]

by Byron Hurd

Concept offers convenience of CUV and utility of a pickup.

Hyundai revealed its Santa Cruz Crossover Truck Concept in Detroit Monday in a bid to raise interest among what Hyundai claims is the second-largest population of car buyers.

Built to appeal to "trending 'urban Adventurer' millennial lifestyles," the Santa Cruz Crossover Truck is part Honda Ridgeline, part Subaru Baja.

The concept features suicide rear doors which integrate seamlessly with the front door design. The wheel arches, roof, and bed rails offer convenient tie-down cleats for securing cargo of all shapes and sizes. The the expandable bed's exterior is sculpted, following the CUV body lines, and for extra utility can be easily reconfigured for longer cargo, using a unique drawer-like sliding function. Elsewhere on the exterior, you'll find custom, center-locking wheels and Brembo brakes.

Under the hood, the Santa Cruz features a 2.0-liter turbo diesel powertrain delivering 190 horsepower and 300 lb.-ft. of torque. This power goes to the ground via all four wheels, and Hyundai claims this combination is good for 30 mpg on the highway.

"Santa Cruz is for the growing population who sees and pursues the world differently," Hyundai said. "It's the crossover truck that meets the unspoken needs of Urban Adventurers."
