SEMA Live: Honda brings supercharged CR-Z concept to SEMA

by Paul Rachwal

Honda brings HPD Supercharged CR-Z Concept to SEMA.

The SEMA show is now in full swing, and we caught sight of this Honda Performance Development, Inc-tuned CR-Z. The aging hybrid was billed as a sporty car but never caught the attention of enthusiasts, which is why Honda is back at it, trying to change the image with a supercharger bolted underhood.

This being SEMA, the changes are more comprehensive, however, as the car also sports uprated suspenders and rolling stock. The 185 horsepower and 169lb-ft of torque of the concept aren't huge numbers, especially compared to the freshened up 2013 CR-Z that makes 134 horsepower and 140lb-ft of torque with the six-speed manual. The centrifugal blower is part of a complete system that includes an air-to-air intercooler, high-flow injectors, air filter, and reprogrammed ECU. The power output is relatively mild as the car runs on 91 octane and meets CARB AT-PZEV regulations.

Otherwise, the car gets an HPD sport exhaust that juts out from the center of the rear bumper, as seems to be the current vogue in hot hatchbacks.

There are also HPD sport dampers enveloping HPD springs that lower the car an unspecified amount, and 11.8-inch front discs squeezed by four-piston aluminum calipers. They peak out from behind Michelin Pilot Super Sport-shod 18x7.5-inch HPD wheels.

Visual changes include Honda Genuine Accessory front and rear spoilers, an HPD rear diffuser, badges, and graphics. There is little likelihood of Honda actually putting the HPD Supercharged CR-Z Concept into production, however.
