GM recalls 690K pickups to fix power steering glitch

by Justin King

The electric power steering system can briefly disengage and re-engage during low-speed turns, potentially causing the driver to lose control.

General Motors has issued a recall for around 690,000 pickups, including the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500.

The company launched an investigation in February after identifying reports alleging loss of electric power steering (EPS) assist. The company was able to link similar reports to a single electrical issue.

Steering events that require high current, such as low-speed turns, can cause the system voltage to briefly drop. When system voltage dips below 8.8 volts, the EPS is temporarily disabled until the voltage returns to 9.0 volts or higher for at least 40 milliseconds.

"If EPS assist is lost and suddenly returned, the driver could lose temporary control of the steering wheel, increasing the risk of a crash," the company warns.

Service technicians will reflash the EPS module software to prevent the potentially unsafe behavior.
