Ford confirms all-electric F-Series pickup

The company wants to 'futureproof' the best-selling nameplate in the US market.

Ford has confirmed plans to launch an all-electric F-Series pickup, preparing the company's most important model to survive the looming shift toward battery power.

The company closed 2018 by celebrating the F-Series' status as the best-selling pickups for the 42nd consecutive year, while the F-150 has retained its dominance as the most popular vehicle of any kind in the US for more than 35 years.

Tesla has promised to build an , a project for which CEO Elon Musk has voiced particular enthusiasm. Highlighting the company's competitive intentions, one teaser sketch shows the truck carrying an F-150 in the bed. The Model 3's has further clarified the threat to established automakers.

Expanding upon previous announcements of a hybrid F-Series truck, Farley has acknowledged that a pure battery-powered variant will be necessary to "futureproof" the Blue Oval's "global juggernaut" pickup franchise.

Ford recently confirmed that midsize pickups will be a focal point of a budding partnership with Volkswagen. The German automaker has boldly proclaimed its intention to dominate the EV boom, making the F-150 a seemingly attractive choice for collaboration.
