Ford offers propane, CNG kit for 2016 F-150by Justin King
The prep package will allow the 5.0-liter V8 engine to run on gaseous fuels, after receiving a fuel tank and additional gear from third-party upfitters.
Ford is preparing to offer a compressed natural gas (CNG) prep kit for the 2016 pickup.
The company had offered a CNG option for the 2015 F-150 with a 3.7-liter V6 engine, but the 2016-model-year kit has been designed to work with the larger 5.0-liter V8 powerplant.
The switch to the V8 will allow customers to maximize payload and tow capacity while minimizing fuel costs, which currently run nearly $0.50 less per gallon of gasoline equivalent, according to . Running on gaseous fuel does not reduce the tow rating or payload numbers.
"The growth in interest for CNG/propane-prepped vehicles shows a shift in fleet customers' mindsets," said Ford's sustainability head for commercial vehicles, Dick Cupka. "They are becoming more forward-thinking about alternative fuels, taking into account their total cost of ownership and looking for ways to reduce their vehicle emissions."
Customers can purchase the prep kit for $315, then send the F-150 off to one of Ford's four certified upfitters to receive the necessary fuel tanks and other gear to complete the conversion.
