Fire risk prompts Kia Niro PHEV recallby Justin King
A component within the power relay assembly can overheat, potentially causing the rear seat to ignite.
Kia has issued a recall for the Niro plug-in hybrid, addressing several warranty claims and complaints related to fires or other 'thermal events.'
The main relay in the power relay assembly may have inadequate connections between s, causing increased electrical resistance and excess heat.
"The increased electrical resistance can overheat the rear seat which is above the PRA, increasing the risk of a fire," the company warns.
The internal investigation found three warranty claims and a single customer complaint of an "unconfirmed rear seat fire," though none of the records are associated with accidents or injuries.
Service technicians will replace the main relay and inspect the relay assembly for damage, replacing additional components as needed.
