The Ferrari 812 Superfast replaces the F12berlinetta at the top of the company's line-up. It's the fastest and most powerful front-engined production car the famed Prancing Horse has ever built.
Bucking the industry's downsizing trend, the 812 Superfast uses a naturally-aspirated 6.5-liter V12 engine that churns out 788 horsepower and 529 pound-feet of torque. Linked to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, the 12-cylinder sends the 82 from zero to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds and on to a top speed in the vicinity of 210 mph. In other words: the 812 Superfast lives up to its name.
It's not all about raw power. Ferrari kept weight in check by building the 812 with materials like aluminum. It consequently tips the scale at 3,593 pounds. 47 percent of that mass is on the front axle while the rest sits over the rear wheels.
The 812 stands out as the first Ferrari equipped with electric power steering. The company promises it doesn't change the driving experience -- quite the opposite, actually. It works with the Virtual Short Wheelbase four-wheel steering system to make the 812 more agile on twisty roads.
Aerodynamics firstThe Superfast cheats the wind. Its front end is characterized by a long hood, sharp headlights, and a mesh grille. Vents on the hood reduce drag by routing air away from the top part of the car.
Heavily-sculpted flanks and a functional air diffuser integrated into the rear bumper help reduce the 812's drag coefficient, while four round tail lamps pushed to the extremities of the rear end emphasize the car's width.
The 812 Superfast offers a premium, high-tech cockpit with numerous aircraft-inspired touches. The two passengers are treated to round air vents made with a combination of carbon fiber and aluminum, exquisite Frau leather on the seats, the center console and the dashboard as well carbon fiber trim on the dash.
The driver sits in front of a three-spoke, flat-bottomed steering wheel that houses every major command including switches for the turn signals, the headlights and the windshield wipers, a knob used to select a driving mode and a button that turns the engine on and off. The climate controls are conveniently located on the dashboard.
The instrument cluster consists of a large tachometer mounted front and center. It is flanked by driver-configurable screens that display the speedometer, the fuel gauge and gauges for the oil and water temperature.
Buyers with extra cash in their pocket can customize their 812 through Ferrari's Tailor Made program. Every aspect of the car down to the minutest detail can be modified by the buyer with the help of a Ferrari-assigned personal designer whose job is to guide future owners through every step of the customization process.
