Dodge Charger recalled over side airbag fault

by Drew Johnson

If you have a Dodge Charger, don\'t slam the doors.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is recalling more than 280,000 full-size sedans in the United States to address a fault that could trigger an inadvertent side airbag deployment. The recall is an extension of a similar safety campaign that was launched last month.

FCA issued the recall after it discovered that the side airbags in its 2011-2014 Dodge sedans could inadvertently deploy if the doors are "kicked or slammed with excessive force.” FCA says it is aware of three minor injuries linked to the recall. No crashes have been blamed on the defect.

In the United States the recall covers 284,153 Charger sedans. Also included in the campaign are 13,169 vehicles in Canada, 2,484 vehicles in Mexico and 22,272 vehicles outside of the NAFTA region.

FCA will remedy the issue by recalibrating the sedan's control module. No timeframe for the recall campaign has yet been released. Until the fault has been fixed, FCA is warning owners "to exercise caution when closing doors.”
