Details emerge on next smart forfourby Ronan Glon
The forfour will stretch approximately 137 inches long.
Daimler's smart brand is preparing to resurrect the fourfor nameplate after an eight-year hiatus, and a new report give us a better idea of what to expect from the city car.
Stretching 137 inches long, the next forfour will share its platform with the third-generation that will bow in Geneva next month. Far from a mere badge-engineering job, the two cars will not share any visual styling cues and the forfour's design will be heavily inspired by the fourjoy concept (pictured) that was presented in Frankfurt last September.
The forfour's interior will be modern and high-tech in order to appeal to a young and relatively well-heeled target audience. Buyers will be able to customize nearly all aspects of the cockpit and a state-of-the-art infotainment system will be available at an extra cost.
The forfour will be powered by a Renault-sourced 0.9-liter three-cylinder engine mounted behind the rear seats and tilted forward in order to free up extra cargo space. The engine will send 90 horsepower to the rear wheels via either a manual or an automatic gearbox.
A diesel-burning mill will not be offered because smart doesn't have access to one capable of being shoehorned in the car's engine bay and designing a new engine from the ground up is prohibitively expensive.
