Holden prepping Commodore GTS-R W1 with ZR1 power: Report

Holden could be planning a significant kick-in-the-pants for its Commodore sedan.

Holden, the Australian division of General Motors, could be planning to send its Commodore sedan off with a bang. Reports out of The Land Down Under suggest that Holden will equip the final version of the muscle sedan with the same engine used in the previous-generation Corvette ZR1.

Australia's Motoring says it has uncovered plans for the last run of Commodore sedans that includes a special edition model with the same 6.2L supercharged V8 used in the last Corvette ZR1. That would give the four-door about 640 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque.

Believed to be called the Commodore GTS-R W1, the super sedan will be available exclusively with a six-speed manual gearbox. It'll also swap the Commodore's Magnetic Ride Control suspension for Aussie Supashock dampers.

The Commodore GTS-R W1 will reportedly launch by mid-2017. Holden will produce just 250 units of the super sedan, each with a price tag of about $130,000.

It's possible that the same LS9 engine could find its way between the fenders of the U.S.-spec Chevrolet SS sedan, which is a kissing cousin to the Holden Commodore. Like the Commodore, the SS is set to ride off into the sunset in the near future, and a supercharged V8 would make for one heck of a swan song.
