The Chevrolet Camaro is a heritage-laced sports car that blends retro style and exhilarating performance in an affordable package. It's offered as a coupe (detailed here) and as a convertible. Buyers can configure the Camaro in a variety of different ways ranging from a boulevard cruiser to a serious track monster.
Chevrolet made comprehensive updates to the Camaro for the latest model year. The changes include a new look additional standard and optional features.
Power to the people
The Camaro's base engine is a turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-cylinder. Though small, it makes 275 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, figures that put it nearly on par with the V8 engines offered in the Camaro during the 1990s.
The four-cylinder spins the rear wheels through either a standard six-speed manual transmission or an optional eight-speed automatic. It propels the Camaro from zero to 60 mph in a quick 5.4 seconds while returning 22 mpg in the city, 31 mpg on the highway, and 25 mpg in a combined cycle.
The Camaro's mid-range engine is a 3.6-liter V6. Offered with the same transmission options as the smaller engine, it pumps out 335 horsepower and 284 pound-feet of torque, figures that allow a 5.1-second sprint from zero to 60 mph. City and highway mileage drop to 19 and 28, respectively.
Finally, enthusiasts who want the full Camaro experience can select the SS model. It ups the ante with a 6.2-liter V8 that delivers 455 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 455 pound-feet of torque at 4,400 rpm. It shifts through either a standard six-speed automatic transmission or an optional 10-speed automatic.
The Camaro wears muscular long hood, short decklid proportions inspired by the original model introduced in 1967. It's not as retro-styled as the Dodge Challenger, however. It stands out with a sleek, modern-looking front end whose design changes depending on the trim level selected. RS models receive an LED light bar, for example. The rear end benefits from LED lighting, too.
Step inside to find a modern-looking, state-of-the-art cabin with either a seven- or an eight-inch touch screen for the infotainment system, ambient lighting, cloud connectivity, and available navigation. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity come standard.
The Camaro's front buckets offer a decent amount of space, but the car's high belt line and chopped roof don't make for an airy cabin. The Camaro's rear seats are extremely tight and best suited for small children, or as an extension of the trunk, which measures 9.1 cubic feet.
Standard and optional features
Chevrolet offers the Camaro in six trim levels called 1LS, 1LT, 2LT, 3LT, 1SS, and 2SS, respectively.
The list of standard features includes the 2.0-liter turbo four, a six-speed manual transmission, 18-inch alloy wheels, cloth upholstery, an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, single-zone A/C, power windows, a tire inflator kit, LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, and Bluetooth connectivity.
Moving up in the trim hierarchy adds more desirable features. 2LT models benefit from heated and leather-upholstered seats, for example. 3LT cars come standard with the V6, while 1SS models get the V8.
The features found on the list of options vary depending on the trim level selected. Highlights include the 1LE package, which bundles 20-inch black forged aluminum wheels with summer tires, a rear spoiler, a black hood wrap, a performance-tuned suspension, and a flat-bottom steering wheel, among other features. The RS package adds a spoiler, 20-inch wheels wrapped by run-flat tires, blacked-out rear lights, and black emblems on both sides.
All Camaro models come standard with a comprehensive safety suite that includes eight airbags (including knee airbags for the front passengers), StabiliTrack electronic stability control, a teen driver function, and OnStar automatic crash response.
The Chevrolet Camaro's arch rivals are the Ford Mustang and the Dodge Challenger. Coupe shoppers not set on an American muscle car can also look at the Audi A5, the BMW 4 Series, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe, or the Infiniti Q60.
