Cadillac Escalade tops most stolen listby Drew Johnson
Keeping its streak alive, the Cadillac Escalade has once again found itself atop the U.S.' most stolen vehicle list.
If you happen to own a Cadillac Escalade, you better make sure to close the garage door tonight. Cadillac's most opulent SUV has once again topped the Highway Loss Data Institute's list of most stolen vehicles in the United States.
According to the HLDI, the 2007-09 Cadillac Escalade has the highest vehicle theft claim rate of any vehicle on U.S. roads. The Escalade is closely followed by the Ford F-250 pickup truck, Infiniti G37 and the Dodge Charger equipped with a HEMI V8. The theft rate on the aforementioned vehicles is 3 to 5 times higher than the average vehicle.
"Sedate family cars and fuel sippers aren't on the hot list," says Kim Hazelbaker, HLDI senior vice president. "Thieves are after chrome, horsepower, and HEMIs." HDLI's report takes into account not only the theft rate of vehicles, but also the average claim per vehicle make and model.
The Escalade has now taken the top spot in 6 of HDLI's last 7 theft reports, with the EXT pickup model leading the way in highest theft losses. Moreover, nearly 25 percent of all Escalade theft claims are for at least $40,000. In comparison, the Dodge Charger's average theft claim is for about $10,000.
New to the list for 2010 is the Chevrolet Corvette Z06. The Z06 is stolen at nearly the same rate at the cars at the top of the lists, but packs a might claim average of $41,000.
