Buick to sell Chinese-designed models in North America?

by Andrew Ganz

Not even Tiger Woods can give Buick the success in its home market that it's seeing in China. Sales of China-specific models continue to climb year after year, and Buick executives are apparently looking to bring some of those vehicles to North America.

Buick's Chinese lineup is currently only offered in that market, although the designs use some of General Motors' global platforms. The brand new Park Avenue (pictured), for instance, is built in China but is loosely based on the Holden Statesman, an Australian-market model. Its predecessor, the Buick Royaum, was built in Australia by Holden.

Automotive News reports that the redesigned Buick Excelle, based on GM's Alpha architecture, would be the first model in the United States. The Alpha platform is an upcoming small, rear-wheel-drive base expected to underpin the Cadillac BLS, in addition to the Saturn Aura. The platform is related to the Kappa, used in the Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice. The Excelle, which would likely be renamed before going on sale in North America, hasn't been shown yet.
