Spied: 2019 BMW X4by Drew Johnson
BMW will launch an all-new version of its X4 next year.
The current X4 feels about 10 minutes old, but BMW is already working on the next-generation of the sporty crossover.
Although the new might seem a little rushed, it's actually not. That's because the X4 is based on the that was last overhauled in 2010. And with the X3 on deck for an all-new model in late 2017, the X4 is also getting a clean-sheet redesign.
The X4's update will include a switch-over to BMW's CLAR modular architecture, which underpins the automaker's latest 5 and 7 Series models. That means the X4 will remain rear-wheel drive-based with an option for all-wheel drive.
The next X4 will be powered by a range 2.0L and 3.0L turbocharged engines. A plug-in hybrid model is also said to be in the works. For those seeking even more performance, the X4 M40i should return, and BMW is believed to be developing a full-on M model for the range. The latter will take on Mercedes' latest GLC AMG model.
The all-new X3 is expected to debut later this year; we'll likely see the new X4 sometime in 2018 as a 2019 model.
