All-new for the latest model year, the BMW X2 is a more stylish alternative to the X1. Both models ride on the same platform and share numerous mechanical parts.
Next to the X1, the X2 appears more truncated and less reminiscent of BMW's larger sport utilities. The rear window area does not extend beyond the X2's c-pillar (not so of the X1) and models equipped with the M Sport X package also boast Frozen Gray body cladding to further stand out.
Being a derivative of the X1 means the X2 ultimately shares its architecture with BMW's group subcompacts - namely the members of the MINI lineup - and is fundamentally a front-wheel-drive vehicle. At 3,600 pounds, it's not exactly tiny, but that's certainly on the lower end for a BMW.
BMW drivers will feel right at home in the X2. The driver-oriented center console houses the HVAC controls, the air vents, and the media controls. It's topped by a screen for the infotainment system. Looking behind the three-spoke steering wheel reveals BMW's easy-to-read twin-gauge analog instrument cluster.
As of writing, BMW offers the X2 with just one engine. It's the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder found in other members of the company's line-up. Here, it's mounted transversally (in simpler terms: east-west) and bolted to an eight-speed automatic transmission. It makes 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.
Front-wheel drive comes standard, giving the base X2 the sDrive28i designation. BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system is offered at an extra cost. It turns the X2 into the xDrive28i. In its fastest configuration, the crossover performs the benchmark zero-to-60-mph sprint in 6.3 seconds.
Standard and Optional Features
The X2 comes standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, black exterior trim, a roof-mounted spoiler, LED lights on both ends, SensaTec upholstery on the seats and the center console, contrast stitching, high-gloss black trim inside, ambient lighting, and a 6.5-inch screen for the infotainment system.
The list of options includes several option packages, including one named M Sport X Design that makes the X2 both sportier and more rugged-looking. Some of the highlights from the list of standalone options are a panoramic moon roof, heated front seats, a wireless phone charger, a Wi-Fi hot spot, an upgraded sound system, Apple CarPlay compatibility (which many rivals offer for free), a space-saver spare tire, and parking sensors.
Every X2 comes with dual front, side, and curtain airbags in addition to traction control, stability control, dynamic brake control, and a brake drying function.
By BMW's own admission, the X2 fights in the same segment as the Mercedes-Benz GLA and the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque.
