BMW X5, X7 get M50i powertrain with 523 horsepower

The X5 M50i can hit 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds.

BMW has introduced two new M Performance variants for the X5 and X7 lineups.

The new M50i trim brings BMW's N63 4.4-liter TwinPower Turbo V8 engine, an eight-speed automatic transmission, xDrive all-wheel drive, an M Sport differential, M Sport exhaust, and model-specific M suspension tuning.

The V8 delivers 523 horsepower starting at 5,500 rpm and 553 pound-feet of torque at 1,800 rpm, an increase of 67 ponies and 74 pound-feet of torque over the xDrive50i powertrain. The extra oomph launches the X5 to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, slightly quicker than the heavier X7's 4.5-second benchmark.

The M50i packages also feature large brakes, unique M wheels, and larger air openings on the front end.

Prices start at $83,145 (including freight) for the X5 M50i or $100,595 for the X7 M50i, with production scheduled to begin in August.
