BMW 330e plug-in hybrid gets 292 horsepower, longer range

Peak 'xTraBoost' output lasts for 10 seconds, then drops to 252 horsepower.

BMW has announced the arrival of the 330e Sedan in Europe, adding more power and longer range thanks to a revised plug-in hybrid powertrain and larger battery.

Pairing a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and a single electric motor, the hybrid can deliver 252 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque in its normal operation mode. An 'xTraBoost' feature adds another 40 horsepower for brief spirited maneuvers, sustaining the higher output for a maximum of 10 seconds at 292 ponies.

The 330e can accelerate from zero to 62 mph in 5.9 seconds and tops out at 143 mph. Electric driving range has increased by 50 percent to 41 miles (presumably a WLTP estimate) and allows speeds of up to 87 mph before the internal-combustion engine is activated.

BMW recently announced that its new plug-in hybrid powertrain will expand across the range to include the 2-, 3-, 5-, and 7-Series, along with the X5.
