BMW adds older models to Takata recall

by Ronan Glon

230,000 cars might have been fitted with defective replacement parts.

BMW is recalling approximately 230,000 older models to replace defective airbag inflators manufactured by Takata.

Industry trade journal reports the recall affects select 2001 - 2002 X5s, 2000 - 2002 3 Series, and 2000 - 2003 5 Series. These cars didn't leave the factory with a Takata inflator, but a defective part might have been installed "at some point" in the vehicle's lifetime, such as after an accident.

BMW's recall notice explains it ordered about 14,600 Takata inflators as spare parts from 2002 to 2015. Most were installed in later models already covered by the massive recall, but a few parts were fitted to earlier models. The issue was brought to the company's attention by the owner of an E46 3-Series (pictured).

BMW dealerships will inspect the affected vehicles and replace the airbag inflators if they were manufactured by Takata, according to Automotive News. Concerned motorists can log on to to check if their car is part of the recall.
