Bentley planning 200mph top speed for upcoming SUVby Nat Shirley
Bentley will not neglect to put the \"sport\" in its upcoming utility vehicle.
In addition to serious off-roading capability, Bentley may also be engineering its first-ever SUV for supercar-like speed.
Blunt and blocky when originally unveiled in , Bentley is said to be designing the production version of the ultra-luxury SUV with a lower roofline, reshaped rear end and other aero-enhancing measures in order to achieve a lofty goal: a top end of 200 mph.
To help the big, heavy utility vehicle safely achieve that velocity, Autocar that the British brand will fit it with advanced underbody aerodynamic aids; how these measures will be protected from rocks, ruts and other hazards of off-road use has not been revealed.
The engine that will propel the SUV to the 200 mph mark likewise has yet to be officially announced, but Bentley's twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter W12 is likely. A twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 and plug-in hybrid variant may also be offered for those willing to make due with a more modest maximum speed.
The SUV, which will ride on a variant of the next-generation Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7 platform, is expected to debut in 2015 before arriving in showrooms the following year.
