Acura will unveil a new prototype race car on August 18.
Acura has announced it's going racing with a new prototype vehicle known as the Acura ARX-05 prototype. The ARX-05, which stands for Acura Racing eXperimental, generation 5, will make its debut at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering later this month.
Acura is keeping the final design of the ARX-05 under wraps until its August 18th introduction, but the racer was penned by the Acura Design Studio in Los Angeles, California under the direction of Dave Marek, Acura global creative director. Honda Performance Development will oversee the engineering of the car.
The ARX-05 will take part in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship starting next year. It'll make its racing debut at the Rolex 24 at Daytona in January 2018. Team Penske will field a pair of ARX-05s for the racing series.
Technical details remain confidential, but Acura says the ARX-05 uses the basic engine as the Acura TLX. Acura is using the racing program to boost its performance credentials.
