Microbus-like I.D. BUZZ Will Appear At VW Dealers In 2022
Though there has been speculation for months about VW's I.D. BUZZ, it became a reality Saturday when Volkswagen announced it was building the electric MPV. First revealed as a concept vehicle, the public first saw the VW Microbus-like multipurpose vehicle (MPV) at April’s Detroit’s North American International Auto Show.
Perhaps the most striking thing about the BUZZ is its uncanny resemblance to the VW Microbus, which rose to fame in the 1960s.Volkswagen, says a company statement, hopes the BUZZ, a fully electric vehicle, “taps into the spirit and vibe that made the VW Microbus such an iconic car – whether with Hippies and families of the 60s or Surfers and Van Life folks today."
North American Management Thrilled With Decision
With its decision to produce the I.D. BUZZ, Hinrich Woebcken, chief executive of VW North America, indicated he was thrilled to welcome the MPV to North America. The decision to begin production was announced on Day One of one of the most prestigious automotive events in the world, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California.
VW announced the MPV would arrive at dealerships in 2022 after the first vehicle of the three-vehicle I.D. concept line, a four-door hatchback, makes its debut in a couple of years. As envisioned, the BUZZ was to be the second of three vehicles set for the I.D. lineup. The third car is said to be a crossover. The addition of the BUZZ broadens VW’s marketing reach. The automaker hopes to the I.D. lineup will broaden its outreach and impact in Europe and China, as well as North America.
Customers Saw Vehicle Concept and Said 'Build It'
“After the presentations at the global motor shows in Detroit and Geneva, we received a large number of letters and emails from customers who said, ‘Please build this car,’” said VW Group chief executive Dr. Herbert Diess, at Pebble Beach.”The Microbus has long been part of the California lifestyle. Now we’re bringing it back by reinventing it as an electric vehicle.”
