Renault unveils retro-styled Twin'Run concept

by Ronan Glon

The mid-engined Twin\'Run borrows design cues from the first-gen Renault 5.

Renault has lifted the sheet off of the retro-styled Twin'Run concept at an event held in Monaco. The car is designed as a homage to the iconic Renault 5 Turbo and the more recent Clio V6.

The Twin'Run stretches 144 inches long, 68 inches wide and 58 inches tall, dimensions that make it slightly bigger than the current Twingo city car. Closely related to the that recently bowed in Milan, the TwinRun's exterior design bears more than a passing resemblance to the first generation of the Renault 5 that was launched in 1972 and christened LeCar for a brief stint in the United States. This indicates that Renault is preparing to fight in the premium retro-styled city car arena which is currently dominated by BMW's MINI and the Fiat 500.

Designed with input from France's Tork Engineering, the body is made out of composite and carbon fiber, lowering the weight to just 2,000 pounds. 57 percent of that mass is on the rear axle, while 43 percent is on the front. Under the skin lies a competition-derived lightweight tubular chassis engineered jointly by Renault and Poclain Véhicules.

The Twin'Run uses a mid-mounted 3.5-liter V6 engine that sends 320 horsepower and 280 lb-ft. of torque to the rear wheels via a six-speed sequential gearbox and a mechanical limited-slip differential. Also found under the hood of the track-only Mégane Trophy, the mill propels the concept from zero to 62 mph in just 4.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 155 mph.

The car's track roots are immediately evident on the inside, where passengers are treated to Sparco bucket seats and a simple and functional dashboard. The instrument cluster has been replaced by a 5.5-inch LCD screen that serves as a speedometer and a tachometer in addition to providing vital information such as the oil pressure and the fuel pressure. The oil and water temperature are displayed by analog gauges mounted to the right of the screen, and a fuel cut-off switch is found on the left.

The Twin'Run will not be added to the Renault catalog as-is, but the 5-inspired styling will be found on the upcoming third generation of the Twingo.
